Why is the Synergy Thrombosis Prevention Program important?
Venous thrombosis (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolisms (PEs), occurs far too frequently with 375,000 to 425,000 new cases diagnosed, and medically treated, annually1. “Over one-half million hospitalizations occur in the US each year1” to treat VTE and “roughly 1 out of 10 hospital deaths are related to PE”2, many of which were not diagnosed prior to death2. Conservatively, these cases cost the US healthcare system $7 – 10 billion each year.1 “Estimates of the total economic impact of VTE, including the value of lost economic output due to premature mortality is as high as $69 billion per year”.1
- In addition to the staggering costs associated with the treatment of VTE, recent research indicates that VTE “causes long-term morbidity, most notably post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) following DVT and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) following a diagnosis of PE.”1
- Research over the past several years has brought to light the prevalence of this condition and identified common risk factors that often result in a VTE event. “In the absence of appropriate preventive treatment, 10 to 40 percent of medical and general surgery patients and 40 to 60 percent of patients requiring major orthopedic surgery develop thrombosis.”1
- Although there are preventive measures available, in many cases, these measures are not being fully utilized. This observation resulted in the Office of the Surgeon General to release “The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism”2. In this document, the Surgeon General provides data to raise the awareness and educate health care professionals on the high incidence rate of this condition while calling for all stakeholders to come together to address the growing number of VTE cases.2
